2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health cover

SAMHSA Releases Results from 2024 Annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released the findings of its 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The report shows how people living in United States reported their experience with mental health conditions, substance use and pursuit of treatment.

The 2024 NSDUH report includes the following selected key findings:

  • The number of people who used illicit drugs in the past year increased to 25.5% (or 73.6 million people) from 24.9% (70.5 million) in 2023.
  • Past-year substance use disorder (SUD) remained about the same, 16.8% (or 48.4 million people) compared to 17.1% (48.5 million people) in 2023.
  • Fewer people (3.5% or 10.2 million) received substance use treatment in the past year than in 2023 (4.6% or 13.1 million.)
  • 6% of people (or 7.6 million) misused opioids in the past year, down from 3.1% (8.9 million) in 2023.
  • 8% of people (or 8.0 million) misused prescription pain relievers, down from 3.0% or 8.6 million in 2023, with 42.3% of those people saying they obtained the pain relievers from a friend or relative in some way (i.e., being given them, buying them, or taking them without asking).
  • Adults with any mental illness (AMI) remained about the same as 2023, 23.4% (or 61.5 million people) compared to 22.8% (or 58.7 million people).
  • Fewer adolescents (28.5% or 7.4 million) received mental health treatment than in 2023 (31.9% or 8.3 million).
  • Mental health treatment for adults remained about the same (23.0% or 59.2 million people) as the previous year (22.9% or 60.1 million people).

The 2024 NSDUH provides a national snapshot of behavioral health in the United States based on self-reported responses from nearly 70,000 people. In addition, the 2024 NSDUH marks the first year since 2020 in which there are at least four years of comparable data for key NSDUH outcomes, adjusting for survey design changes since 2020, enabling reporting of trends for the first time since 2019.
